We are excited that you are interested in joining the LCMS Bullfrog Band! We know you may have many questions, and we will be able to answer all of them on the following pages.
BEGINNING BAND GENERAL INFORMATION - This page will give you general information on what beginning band, which instruments are offered and how to select an instrument.
INSTRUMENT SELECTION NIGHT - This page has information on our instrument selection night. This year our instrument selection will on Thursday, February 6, 2025 in the LCMS Cafeteria from 5:30PM - 8:00PM. You will be able to try out all of the instruments, select an instrument you'll learn in 6th grade, meet the band directors and get information on how to get an instrument and your supplies for the upcoming school year.
BAND INSTRUMENTS - Here you can find specific information on each instrument. You'll get a description and picture of what each instrument looks like. There is also a link to a video to show you what it sounds like. Most importantly it will have information on how to get an instrument, get your supplies and all of things you'll need for the upcoming school year. All you have to do is look for the instrument you like or have selected and all of the information you need will be there.
BENEFITS OF JOINING BAND - There are many reasons why you should join band. Here you'll be given reasons on why band is beneficial to your education. It's more than just learning an instrument and making music!

Beginning Band General Information
What is Beginning Band?
Beginning band is designed for students who would like to learn how to play an instrument for the very first time. The class is mainly designed for 6th grade, but is open to 7th and 8th grade students. Students will also learn the basic fundamentals of how to read and write music.
Which instruments can my child select from?
Instruments students may select from are the flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba and percussion. Percussion includes bells, snare and a lot more.
How does my child select or choose an instrument and join the beginning band?
Thursday, February 6, 2025 we will be hosting Instrument Selection Night in the Lucyle Collins Middle School Cafeteria from 5:30PM to 8:30PM. Students will be able try out all of the instruments, select the instrument of their choice and be assigned a band class. There is no need to sign up in advance. Please show up at the Lucyle Collins Middle School Cafeteria between 5:30PM - 8:30PM and we will take care of the rest.
What other information will be available for parents?
At the Instrument Selection Night in the Lucyle Collins Middle School Cafeteria parents will be able to get the following information.
- Contact information for the band directors.
- How to reserve an instrument for your child.
- The supplies that your child will need for band.
- A tentative band calendar with rehearsals, concert dates and other events.
- Financial obligation and cost for the band. (Do not let money keep your child from being a part of the best program in LWISD. We have solutions to help you with financial obligations.)

I have never been to Lucyle Collins Middle School where do we park and enter the building?
Lucyle Collins Middle School is located at 3651 Santos Dr, Fort Worth TX, 76106
If you are turning in from Azle Avenue you will make a left at the first entrance of Lucyle Collins Middle School. Plenty of parking is available. To enter the building you will enter the cafeteria doors. Someone will be at the door to greet you and there will be a check in table for you to sign in and get the information you will need. A map of where to park and enter the building is provided for you below.
We are very excited your child has shown interest in the Bullfrog Band program at Lucyle Collins Middle School. We look forward to meeting you at the Instrument Selection Night on Thursday, April 11, 2024 from 5:30PM - 8:30PM. Flute

The flute is the smallest of the beginner instruments and is a member of the woodwind family. Flutes produce a sound when a flute player's air flow goes across the opening of the flute called a tone hole.
Flute players should have a slight “frown” to the upper lip with NO tear drop shape in the middle. Flute tones are produced by being able to focus an extremely small airstream to an exact location on the tone hole. The tear-drop-shaped lip will make it difficult to direct the air so precisely. Flute players should also have agile fingers for moving this multi-keyed instrument through a fast musical passage. Students with extreme overbites (receded jaw) should avoid choosing flute as this makes it difficult to produce quality sounds.

However the you are responsible for purchasing the instrument supplies for the flute. Please note that we only have a limited number of flutes. Clarinet

The clarinet is a member of the woodwind family that uses a “single reed” and a mouthpiece to produce the sound. The Clarinet is a "Melody" instrument and frequently has the most important parts in band music. All students start on a Soprano Clarinet but a few will have the opportunity to play the Bass Clarinet in the second semester of 6th grade, seventh or eighth grade (based on their proven musical and behavioral abilities while in clarinet class). One necessity of clarinet tone production is the ability to make the chin flat to produce and develop a good sound.

Alto Sax
The alto saxophone gives the impression of being both a brass AND woodwind instrument, however it is indeed considered a woodwind instrument. The alto saxophone (which uses a single reed like the clarinet) is very popular in many kinds of music, especially jazz and rock. Students will begin on the Alto Saxophone but will have the opportunity to audition for Tenor Sax or Baritone Sax after the first semester of beginning band (based on their proven musical and behavioral abilities while in alto saxophone class).

Trumpet
The trumpet is the smallest member of the brass family. The sound on trumpet is produced by vibrating the lips together in a small mouthpiece. Trumpet usually play the melody (recognizable) part, therefore students who choose and are selected for trumpet should exhibit a confident demeanor, strong personality, and demonstrate a high level of self-motivation.

HOW DO GET AN INSTRUMENT?
Lake Worth ISD provides french horn for students at a cost of $40 rental for an entire school year, but students are required to purchase their own mouthpieces and supplies.

Trombone

The trombone is played like the other brass instruments (buzzing into a cup-shaped mouthpiece), but uses a slide instead of valves. The slide is not marked or notched and players rely on their memory and hearing to tell if they are in the EXACT proper location. Students with good musical ears should consider Trombone.

The tuba provides the musical foundation for the band and requires players that are self-motivated over-achievers. While many believe the tuba is the largest instrument in the band and would be hard to physically manage, the tubas we use for beginners are 3/4 size and easy to handle!
HOW DO GET AN INSTRUMENT?
Lake Worth ISD provides tubas for students at a cost of $40 rental for an entire school year, but students are required to purchase their own mouthpieces and supplies.

Percussion
The percussion section includes all of our keyboard instruments, as well as triangles, tambourines, maracas, claves, and countless other accessories and drums. Students that want to learn percussion must exhibit a very high level of coordination and dexterity. The majority of our percussion test is dedicated to testing students coordination and dexterity. Percussion students MUST be responsible and organized! Students that have great behavior and are on the A Honor Roll will be highly considered for the percussion class.

We have a very specific percussion that must be purchased to be in the percussion class. You will need to order your percussion pak online from the Percussion Source. The percussion pack will include:

WHAT ELSE DO I NEED FOR BEGINNING PERCUSSION CLASS?
You will need to check out a LWISD School Owned Bell Kit for home practice. There is a fee of $40 that will need to be paid. This fee is also an instrument usage fee because percussionist will use various instruments owned by LWISD such as snare drum, bass drum, bells, xylophone, vibraphone, marimba, timpani and much more.

Benefits of Participating in Band
Band is much more than a class to play an instrument. It is the development of a family of friends that lasts a lifetime and establishes some profound influences. These influences will determine much of your child’s success in all aspects of education, not just music. There has been a lot of research about the benefits of music, some of which are listed below!
A research team reports that early music training dramatically enhances children's abstract reasoning skills. These findings indicate that music uniquely enhances higher brain functions required for mathematics, chess, science and engineering.

What do I have to know about music to join band?
Nothing at all, and no experience is needed! Everything you need to know to play an instrument will be taught in beginner band. Any previous musical knowledge is a bonus, but not necessary for success!
When is the best time to join band?
The best time to join band is in 6th grade! However, if you are in the 7th grade or 8th grade and missed the opportunity to join band in the 6th grade, it's not too late. Contact the band directors and we'll work to get you signed up for band!!!
How do I know what instrument I'll play?
Please do not buy an instrument before we meet with you! We will have an instrument selection night. We meet with every student one-on-one and take some time to get to know them, as well as looking for facial characteristics that will help them be successful on their instrument. We will test out any instruments your student is interested in as well as some we may think are a good fit to find what suits your student best. The hardest thing about a lot of these instruments is producing a beautiful sound, and we are determined to help your student find an instrument they will be successful at and enjoy playing. Oftentimes, a student will be a GREAT fit for an instrument they didn't even think to try!
What instruments can my student learn?
When we do your student's instrument placement, we will look for characteristics that will help them be successful on our various band instruments and we will find the best fit for every student! You may be surprised at what instrument is a good fit for your child! Your child will be able to select from the the following instruments (Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinet, Alto Sax, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba and Percussion)
When do students join band?
The best time for students to start is at the beginning of their sixth grade year. The vast majority of our band members joined band as sixth graders. However, we have students every year who join our band family in either seventh or eighth grade!
My student is very busy! Can they also be in athletics, UIL academics, and other groups?
YES. We encourage our band students to participate in athletics, UIL Academics and other school activities. Many of our band students are very successful athletes, as well as ACADEMIC LEADERS of our school!
There are very few after-school commitments in beginner band (Typically 4-5 per year), and our 7th/8th grade students just have one sectional before or after school per week on a typical week. We will schedule these around your schedules in order to avoid as many conflicts as possible.
Who will be in band?
Your student’s friends and fellow classmates will join them in what will be some of the most exciting and fun times of their school experience. The more friends, the most fun! With over 200 band students @ Lucyle Collins Middle School, the band is the largest organization in the district. Many of our students are the school leaders and among the most successful students at LCMS!
What fun things will we do in band?
The best reward is learning to play an instrument and make music! Your students will experience many parties, trips, concerts, contests & performances throughout the year!
My son or daughter didn't join band in 6th grade. Is it too late?!
No! We have had 7th and 8th-grade students join us as beginners and all have been very successful! Please contact Mr. Guerrero for details!
My student has Asthma / braces / another underlying medical condition. Can they be in band?
Absolutely! There is a great instrument option for every student who wants to be in band. We've had many students with asthma, and many of our students get braces in middle school. Playing a wind instrument can actually be beneficial for students with Asthma as it helps strengthen the lungs! We'll make it work for any student who wants to be a part of our organization!
How much does it cost to be in band?
There are fees that come with being in band. It is dependent on your instrument and other factors. Fees usually include band supplies, band binders/books, instrument care supplies and band trip fees. Do not let fees or financial obligations keep you from being in band. We will help you figure it out. If you really want to be in band, we will find a way!
