Welcome to Ms. Steel's Class Website!!
Hello! I am Katherine Steel and I am a 3rd grade teacher. This is my third year at Effie Morris Elementary School. I moved from Houston two years ago where I taught Kindergarten for two years and 2nd grade for two years. Before that, I attended the University of Texas at Austin. Hook em! \m/ I have a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Chinese. If you ever want to learn some Mandarin, come and find me! My students will be learning simple terms throughout the year. We already know "thank you", "you're welcome", and "good morning." I just recently finished my Master's in Education- Literacy Studies at University of Texas in Arlington. I am passionate about teaching reading! Luckily, I am the Reading teacher for third grade. I absolutely love this position and can't wait to read with your students!
Please feel free to visit this website for updates. I have my schedule and spelling words posted on the tabs to your left. Also, check our our class blog for exciting things that we are learning in the classroom or special events at school.
The following are ways to contact me. The best way would be to email or simply send a note with your child in their planner.
Conference Period: (9:35 - 10:30)

I look forward to having a great year with you and your child. I am so blessed to be a part of the beautiful Lake Worth ISD!
Odin
Posh
Merlin
Pinky
The pictures above are my pets! Odin is a 2 year old Schnorkie (Schnauzer/Yorkie) who loves to chew plastic bottles and run around as fast as he can. Posh is a 10 year old Border Collie who just passed away recently. She will always be remembered as the smartest, most beautiful, and loving dog I've ever owned or met. She loved to play frisbee and was afraid of thunder. If there was ever bad weather, you would find her hiding under the bed. Merlin is a 2 year old Catahula. He was adopted from the Humane Society of North Texas. Isn't he a cutie? He has heterochromia iridium. If you want to know what this is, research it on the internet to find out. Let me know what you find! Last but not least is Pinky, the most special dog anyone could ever own. He is the little hairless dog in the background with a red sweater on. He is an American Hairless Rat Terrier. He has absolutely not hair, but does have a few whiskers. He has to wear a shirt or sweater at all times so that he doesn't get too cold in the winter or sunburned in the summer! What a silly dog.

2011-2012 STAAR UPDATE:
Dear Parents,
Your grade 3-8 student participated in the new State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR assessments this spring. STAAR has replaced the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). The STAAR program at grades 3–8 assesses the same grades and subjects that were assessed under TAKS.
In the past, a Confidential Student Report (CSR) was provided to your student. The CSR provided information regarding performance on specific objectives and a scale score that indicated meeting or not meeting the passing standard on each specific TAKS assessment. Due to the implementation timeline for the new STAAR testing program, performance standards for grades 3-8 will not be set until fall 2012 and our district will not receive CSRs until January 2013 for STAAR assessments taken in spring 2012. We will mail CSRs home in January 2013.
